Turkish Ankara Agates- obtained between the northern part of the Cubuk district of Ankara and the southern part of the Sabanozu district of Cankiri- are known for their distinctive patterns and colors. They can be found in a variety of types, including:
*Amygdaloidal Agate-
This agate has a basaltic matrix with rounded chalcedony particles, some of which have banded structures in shades of green and lilac-blue.
*Ankara Stick & Pseudomorph Agate-
This translucent agate has banded colors and patterns that are the result of pseudomorrphic replacement and also has a section of dense rod-like formations. This occurs when agate fills a cavity within a rock that already contains mineral formations throughout. In the case of these stick agates from Turkey, the agate formed as a pseudomorph after aragonite and/or sagenite crystals. In some cases, these aragonite crystals form as hollow tubes that, when polished, contain agate and/or druzy quartz within.
*Ankara Tube Agate-
This translucent agate has brown-rimmed, highly patterned tube structures that can be seen rising through the stone.
